Palace Gardens below Prague Castle
These lovely terraced formal gardens (Palácové zahrady pod Pražským Hradem) on the southern slope of the castle were created in the 17th and 18th centuries for the surrounding noble palaces. Laid out with statues, fountains and baroque summer houses, the gardens also host occasional music and drama performances.
King Solomon
While you're in Josefov, why not try some Jewish delicacies such as gefilte fish, carp and chicken soup? There are also inventive recipes involving duck, venison and lamb. Vegetarians won't find much to munch, but no doubt they'll appreciate the kosher wines and spirits as much as their meat-eating friends.
Hostel Klub Habitat
This clean and friendly hostel has just 35 beds in an old apartment building at the back of the Baroque Cathedral of Sts Cyril and Methodius. It's a quiet place, but the location is very central and guests have use of a shared kitchen.
Dům U krále Jiřího
King George's House is an appealing pension with rooms that have been given a crisp modern makeover; the attic rooms, with exposed wooden beams, are the most attractive. It's within easy walking distance of Old Town Square, although the bar is so comfortable you may not bother venturing outside. Unfortunately there's no lift, only steep stairs.
Bellagio Hotel
This grand and boldly pink 19th-century building sits in one of the quieter corners of Josefov, a stone's throw from the river. The large restful rooms are tastefully furnished, and a vague Italian style is maintained throughout, including a top class restaurant in the basement.
Helena Fejková Gallery
Fejková's designer clothes will appeal more to mature women, but females of all ages will enjoy the slightly Victorian showroom. Up the stairs opposite Kavarna Lucerna you'll find old shop dummies set between movie lights across a creaky floor. Some of the jewellery is quite funky and affordable.
Blatouch
Nobody will think you're anti-social if you turn up with a book for company and curl up in a corner for the night. Serving tea, coffee and snacks, Blatouch is a pleasantly relaxed literary hang-out, with a long, narrow bar lined with antique bookcases and Edward Hopper prints, and a tiny garden courtyard out the back.
Gay Iniciativa (Gay Initiative)
Gay Iniciativa is the national organisation for gays and lesbians; it can offer information on events, venues and resources.
Anagram
A good spot to look for Czech works in translation, this excellent English-language bookshop is a community-minded place that organises film evenings.
Café FX
Clad with chiffon and tasselled lampshades, this hippy-chic cafe at the entrance to the Radost FX nightclub dishes up imaginative plates ranging from Indian-spiced aubergine with mint yogurt to Thai veggies in coconut sauce. No meat in sight, and a good, healthy way to kick off the evening's festivities!
Lotos
Lotos specialises in vegetarian, vegan and macrobiotic meals, and in making you feel relaxed in its sparse environment. It has delicious soups and salads, and specialities like Asian-style tempeh, moussaka and Serbian risotto. It's also that Prague rarity that will make it a favourite for the health conscious - a nonsmoking eatery.
Legends Sports Bar
With 16 TV screens showing everything from British football to boxing, this place can easily claim to be Prague's biggest and most popular sports bar. It isn't that big, however, and gets very crowded, very quickly. A huge drinks list, lots of burgers and all-day breakfasts keep the punters rolling in.
Hotel Josef
With a stark white minimalist vestibule looking like a Hollywood stage designer's concept of a heavenly airport departure lounge, Josef is a stunning boutique hotel with 109 soundproof rooms, including two fitted for disabled guests. It also has the grooviest glass spiral staircase around.
Ambiente Ristorante Pasta Fresca
Another branch of the glossy Ambiente chain, this hugely popular place is a good choice for quality pasta and fish dishes. Service is speedy and the extensive wine list is good too, complementing the restaurant's culinary theme with a mind-boggling range of Italian tipples. It's advisable to book ahead for dinner.
Big Ben
A small but very well-stocked English-language bookshop, with shelves devoted to a range of subjects including Prague reference books, travel, children's literature, science fiction, poetry and the latest bestsellers. Big Ben also sells English-language newspapers and magazines at the counter.
Propaganda
This small, busy neighbourhood pub in Nové Město is strewn with abstract sculptures. It attracts a youngish crowd, half of whom seem to gather permanently around the table-football in the back room. Challenge the locals to a game and make some friends (or enemies).
Cat's Gallery
If you like cats, you'll love Cat's Gallery, with its colourful collection of feline ephemera. Cat-emblazoned T-shirts, cups, calendars and clocks can all be had, or perhaps you're just looking for an anthropomorphic ceramic cat smoking a cigar? Look no further!
Museum of Marionette Culture
Rooms filled with a multitude of authentic, colourfully dressed marionettes from the late 17th to early 19th centuries make up the Museum of Marionette Culture. Star attractions are the Czech figures Spejbl and Hurvínek. The museum is upstairs inside the courtyard.
Alcohol Bar
A booklike drinks menu more than 80 pages long, a selection of 400 cocktails, a glinting display of rum, tequila and whisky and a cigar humidor - this New York-style bar wheels in a reasonably sophisticated mix of international and local guests.
Prague Wheelchair Users Organisation
Prague Wheelchair Users Organisation (Pražská organizace vozíčkářů) can organise a guide and transportation at about half the cost of a taxi, and has an online guide to barrier-free Prague.
Mamaison Residence Americká Park
This luxury serviced apartment complex, tucked away in a quiet, leafy corner of Vinohrady, is principally aimed at long-stay international business travellers, with 16 modern but homely suites of varying sizes. There's a pool, gym and a relaxing garden.
Slovanský Dům
Even if you're totally uninterested in its fashion stores (from streetwise Miss Sixty to upmarket Cerruti via preppy Tommy Hilfiger), Prague's leading mall is worth knowing for its restaurants, including Kogo, and its multiplex cinema. The complex was up for sale at the time of writing, but it's unlikely consumers will notice any difference.
Baker Street
Baker Street sells racks chock-full of beautifully made, brightly polished pipes, as well as a wide and impressive range of cigars and some undeniably snazzy lighters. On top of that, you can also add to your stock of super-strong absinthe here, if that's your tipple of choice. Fuggy nights are just around the corner…
Residence Nosticova
Tucked away down a quiet lane in Malá Strana, Nosticova is a luxurious all-suite hotel offering a choice of individually designed one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, all with kitchenettes and lounge areas. There's a good restaurant downstairs if you don't want to cook.
Bílý kruh bezpeí
The best known service for women in Prague is the White Circle of Safety (Bílý kruh bezpeí) which also provides help and counselling to victims of criminal offences of all kinds.
Basilica of St George
The striking, brick-red, early-baroque façade that dominates the square conceals the Czech Republic's best-preserved Romanesque church, established in the 10th century by Vratislav I (the father of St Wenceslas). What you see today is mostly the result of restorations made between 1887 and 1908.
Ambassador Zlatá Husa
This towering temple of glitz looms over the northern end of Wenceslas Sq, offering 162 rooms with the usual five-star facilities, and lots of marble, crystal chandeliers and other such showiness. There's also a casino and nightclub.
Celetná Crystal
This vast, sparkling emporium has a dazzling range of traditional and contemporary cut crystal laid out over three levels, so whether it's martini glasses, crystal pineapples, chandeliers or any other glassy luxury you're looking for, you are most likely to find it here. Bohemian porcelain and amber jewellery are also here to tempt you.
